Eine Gute Tat Meets MINT

Eine Gute Tat Meets MINT

In the context of our “Eine Gute Tat” program, our partnership with the regional MINT-Netzwerk is taking shape. The Netzwerk is focused on promoting pupils who have a strong interest for MINT (Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences, Technics/Engineering). Together with them, we can now share our excitement for what we do – and bring some real life examples into classrooms, around advisory, software development and engineering and computational and data sciences. The first event targeted elementary schools – and our goal was simple: spark some interest and share our passion for software development – using Calliope, an open-source mini hardware platform that offers a wide range of sensors and outputs. 13 kids were invited to join the first event – eagerly spending nearly two hours on getting to know the device and the programming editor. Once the fundamentals were established, the kids started programming. After only 15 minutes nearly all kids made changes and modifications to their programs: improving it, following their own creativity, and bring the device to life. As there was no limitation in what to do at the first day, the programs developed fast – from simple “hello world” into image animations, using buttons to control, LED colors and sounds. It’s always surpirsing to see what a little spark of enthusiasm can create in the hand of kids that are interested to learn. This is at the core of what we want to achieve in our “Eine Gute Tat” program – and we couldn’t be more proud of the kids joining us on the journey.
